Cupric sulfate also known as blue vitriol, is a salt created by the reaction of cupric oxide with sulfuric acid. This forms as large, bright blue crystals containing five molecules of water and is also known as blue vitriol. The anhydrous salt is created by heating the hydrate.
It is used primarily for agricultural purposes, as a pesticide, germicide, feed additive, and soil additive.
Its other uses are as a raw material for other copper derivatives, as a reagent in analytic chemistry, as an electrolyte for batteries and electroplating baths.
In medical practice it is used as fungicide, bactericide, and astringent
In the anhydrous form, it is used as drying agent, as an additive for fertilizers and foods, and several industrial applications such as textiles, leather, wood, batteries, ink, petroleum, paint, and metal, among others.
It is also used as an animal nutritional supplement.
The paint industry uses it in anti-fouling paints and in Glass industry used in coloring of glass.
